“If they don’t like it they don’t have to eat there!”
“You don’t see me going to a vegetarian restaurant and demanding a steak, do you?”
“Why do they have to ruin my In-N-Out experience!?”
These are just some of the comments I’ve seen from people in response to a petition posted on Change.org to ask In-N-Out to put a veggie burger on its menu, and to be honest it’s more than a little disheartening. I don’t often put much stock into online petitions (there was one asking Obama to build a Death Star, for example), but this one hit home for me enough that I signed it. I have no doubt this will raise the ire of some of my friends on Facebook, so I’ve decided to write an actual blog to share with EVERYONE to explain why I think this battle is worth fighting.
I am not a vegetarian or vegan, but I have friends that are. Now, I realize that In-N-Out is first and foremost a “burger joint” that is known for its delicious meat, but to me In-N-Out is more than just a place to enjoy good burgers. I (along with many others from SoCal and other regions, I’m sure) have grown up with the experience of going to In-N-Out for many an occasion, to the point where there is an experience attached to the trip.
If you haven’t been to an In-N-Out you might not know this experience, but chances are you’ve had a similar one wherever you frequent (Steak N Shake, Five Guys, etc.)…and perhaps, if this petition involved your favorite restaurant you might also have the feeling of “STAY AWAY FROM MY EXPERIENCE.” I can understand the concern, but at the same time, I feel that the experience of going to these places should be shared by everyone, and not restricted by dietary restrictions. Now, I realize that not every restriction can be met at all times…but we can do our best!
